Liu Xiaodong’s “Into Taihu” is part of a series of works that document China’s young generation, affected by both natural and man-made disasters. In this painting, the artist portrays Taihu, the third-largest freshwater lake in China. Supplying water to about 30 million people, the lake is one of the natural wonders of Southeast China, however, the lake has become severely polluted. 'Into Taihu' depicts an eerie scene of seven boys sitting on a boat on the surface of this water, painted in poisonous hues of neon green. Seven white herons take flight in a panic, symbolizing a longing for freedom and a need to escape.
