Safety For All - SDPD's K9 Unit

Описание: Did you know SDPD K9 Unit has been recognized as one of the best teams in the country? Your donation to the San Diego Police Foundation will be used to purchase dogs and canine training equipment that allows new dogs to follow in the paw prints of our retiring K9 crimefighters.

The K9 Unit is mobilized when a dangerous call is in progress, such as a burglary, robbery, or vehicle pursuit, often defusing potentially violent confrontations.

The dogs are able to clear areas before officers approach on foot, and they can perform searches in urban areas, canyons, or buildings for fleeing and hidden suspects.

This service saves SDPD up to nearly 700 human hours annually, since the K9s can cover up to four times the distance as their human partners.

Police service dogs work with one officer, their handler, until they're about eight years old, after which they retire and live in comfort with the handler with whom they have long served.

For the past 22 years, every police service dog at SDPD has been purchased with funds raised by the Police Foundation.

Last year SDPD's K9 Unit responded to approximately 21,000 calls, working 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the entire city, benefiting all our communities.
