Bee Palmer's Vocalese Recording January 10, 1929
Vocalist Bee Palmer recorded a vocalese version of "Singin' the Blues" with Frank Trumbauer's Orchestra in New York City.
Presented by Paul Whiteman and directed by Lennie Hayton, the arrangement by Bill Challis featured saxophones playing a transcription of Trumbauer's original 1927 solo while Palmer sang lyrics by Ted Koehler to Bix Beiderbecke's famous cornet solo.
This recording is one of the earliest examples of vocalese —the art of setting lyrics to previously recorded instrumental jazz solos—predating other recordings by over 15 years.
Recorded for Columbia Records, the session produced three takes but remained unreleased at the time. Take 3 was discovered in vaults and first released in 1997 on a Trumbauer CD compilation, with Take 1 later appearing in a Mosaic boxed set.
All music (including AI-assisted elements) and visuals are original, curated, and produced by Two Cats Jazz Radio.
