This is done to check propagation material—making sure the corm/tuber is alive, sprouting properly, and not rotting—before planting or dividing it for more starts. Inspecting the sprout and flesh helps decide whether it’s ready to go into the ground or whether damaged pieces should be discarded.
Key details to watch are sprout protection, disease signs, and handling cleanliness. The pink shoot is the growth point, and snapping or bruising it can delay emergence or kill that planting piece, so peeling should be gentle and focused on removing only the outer husk. Watch for soft, watery tissue, bad odor, dark lesions, or insect holes, which indicate rot or pest damage and can spread if planted; soil stuck in creases can also introduce pathogens when the skin is torn open.
This could be improved by loosening soil around the tuber with a small trowel to avoid tearing the sprout, then cleaning it with water and trimming with a clean knife instead of ripping by hand. If pieces are divided for planting, make sure each piece has a healthy bud and let cut surfaces dry/callus in shade before planting to reduce rot. Standardizing planting depth and using well-drained soil (plus spacing to improve airflow) will improve establishment and reduce losses.
