A quick overview of the city's beginnings.
The circumstances and the time of the separation from Salzburg and the birth of Burghausen as a free imperial fiefdom and county are in the dark. In 1025, Burghausen was mentioned in a document by Kunigunde of Luxembourg, the widow of Emperor Heinrich II, who had died shortly before. This is the oldest written mention of the city that has survived to this day. Kunigunde wanted to give Purchusun (Burghausen) to the Bishopric of Salzburg, but this was prevented by Emperor Konrad II: He regarded Burghausen as an inalienable imperial property.
In 1180 the Wittelsbach Duke Otto I was enfeoffed with the county. From that point on, Burghausen was to remain under the rule of the Wittelsbach family until the November Revolution in 1918.
With the elevation of Burghausen to the status of residential city, the decree of the dukes that all the salt from Hallein first had to be transported via the Salzach waterway and was only allowed to be landed at the customs office in Burghausen for further transport was decisive. This decree was decisive for the great wealth and political influence Burghausen wanted in the following centuries.
After the first division of Bavaria from 1255, under the approximately 20-year-old Duke Heinrich XIII. A new castle was built on the ridge above the city, parts of which are still preserved today: the castle chapel in the inner castle of Burghausen Castle is considered the oldest early Gothic sacred building in southern Bavaria. In 1272, a Salzach bridge appears for the first time in a document, which was probably located roughly at the location of today's "old bridge".
A long historical story, I won't be able to tell it all. I'll leave the full city story link in the description box.

From the late 1960s, the entire old town and the castle complex were renovated. The decision in favor of redeveloping the old town and against a large-scale demolition of the same was made in the Burghausen city council with a narrow majority of just one vote. In the course of redeveloping the old town in 1969/70, a quay wall was erected to prevent the city from being repeatedly flooded in the future.
