What's RHIZOMATIC-STORY? #shortvideo #business #podcast I'm David Boje. I develop Rhizomatic-Storytelilng in my 2020 book, Storytelling In Action (Routledge). Ion this video I take you on a walk in the desert of New Mexico, to my favorite pond. We pick up some things with vibrant energy waves, and craft a rhizomatic story or two. If you think about like crabgrass spreading wildly in different directions, that's kind of what rhizomatic storytelling is like. It's mult-idirectional, it's interconnected web, an assemblage of things and humans, at the pond. Rhizomatic Storytelling draws on thinkers like Henri Bergson (vitalism), Jane Bennett (onto-story), Bruno Latour (actor-network theory), Anete Strand, (material storytelling lab), and Karen Barad (intra-activity of materiality and discourse, i.e. storytelling), to highlight how our experiences are always kind of entangled with the physical world around us is rhozomati assemblages, moving, changing, and we are part of it. It's more like an assemblage of all these different experiences and ideas.
Rhizomatic storytelling, not a straight line, but more like a tangled web. It's not just about the objects themselves, but the stories and the feelings that they evoke for that person. Exactly. It's about tapping into what JANE BENNETT calls vital materialism. Jane Bennett calls the speculative ‘onto-story’. Onto- stands for ontological, a way of Being in the world. Onto-story, in her book Vital Materialism, is “to hazard an account of materiality, even though it is too alien and too close to see clearly, and even though linguistic means prove in adequate to the task the story will highlight the extent to which human being and hood overlap, the extent to which we to the extent to which they use and the slash slide into each other one more of the story is that we are also nonhuman and the things too are vital players in the world so we are both human and non-human.
At Conversational Storytelling Inquiry (CSI) we use rhizomatic storytelling as an intervention, a way to change organizations, expanding out of linear narrative thinking.
