Iyer’s first assignment as captain will be a two-match T20I series in Dublin, followed by a crucial five-match T20I series against England. The decision is being viewed as part of India’s long-term planning for future global tournaments, including the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics.

According to reports, selectors considered multiple options, including retaining Suryakumar Yadav and evaluating Hardik Pandya for the leadership role. However, Iyer’s impressive captaincy record, consistent performances, and leadership qualities reportedly helped him secure the position.

The 31-year-old recently guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title and led Mumbai to domestic T20 success. His appointment marks a remarkable comeback after being out of India’s T20I setup since late 2023.
