Check out this video showing how termites made it around this termite shield and went on to cause damage to this pier and beam or crawl space foundation. They didn't work in this case. There's a lot of info out there on the effectiveness and the intended purpose of termite shields.
-----Some say the shields are a barrier termites can't get around (but this video proves that wrong). Others say they create a "warning gap" to give you time to act and get a termite treatment, and others say they are more of a barrier to protect the wood above from moisture so it's not as attractive to termites. All of these reasons and purposes make sense and seem logical, so why not give your home the best possible chance at protecting against termites?
-----BUT STILL, no matter what you think the intended purpose is for termite shields, this video proves that they are not a full prevention measure. You likely still need BOTH regular monitoring of your crawl space, AND proactive pest control treatments, especially if your crawl space is moisture-laden. Best of luck!
