There’s a giant hole in the Peak District that swallows water—and it’s completely intentional.
At first glance, the two massive plugholes at Ladybower Reservoir look like something out of a science fiction film. But these aren’t accidents, sinkholes, or the beginning of an underground alien invasion. They’re bellmouth overflows—and they’re one of the most dramatic bits of civil engineering hidden in plain sight in the British countryside.
In this video, I’m at Ladybower Reservoir in Derbyshire to explore how these enormous drains work, what they’re actually for, and what would happen if you fell in one (spoiler: don’t). We’ll look at why they were built in the 1940s, how they helped create a reservoir that drowned two entire villages, and what lies at the bottom of these mysterious concrete whirlpools.
Because sometimes, the most fascinating bits of engineering aren’t behind locked doors—they’re wide open, right in front of you, and thundering with water.
