A few years ago I started a video series on Brutal Mario. At the time, I was intending to draw in a bigger audience because I had been playing mostly obscure hacks during that time. That didn't work as well as I thought it would, but one video in particular got a lot of attention. I was playing through Bowser's Castle using both the Cheap Demo and Boss Demo, not knowing that a full version of the stage was available. Even with that, the video in question got over 40,000 views. While I thank you for that, I could've done more with it.
In an attempt to reboot the Brutal Mario playlist, I decided to re-record that video and play the whole level this time. Wasn't that easy of a task, as the Boss Demo tends to freeze quite a bit. Regardless though, I enjoyed the experience. I hope that those of you who liked the outdated version will like this one too.
Finish! Bowser's Keep is probably my favorite level in Brutal Mario. I love how diverse it is, and all of the custom bosses.
The stage starts out like the final level of SMB3, except with some custom sprites up there with the ones used in the Devious Four Chronicles in terms of my favorites.
The giant ninji and mechakoopa are both pretty easy to beat, although you will have to know their patterns quite well.
The next part takes place on a bridge. Here, you will fight the giant Piranha from Yoshi's Island. The tactic here is to get it to crash into the wall, then jump on its head. After beating it, the moon will come to life and fight you. Hit it with three blocks and you'll be victorious. However, there is still one more fight in this section, Baby Bowser. This one takes place on the moon, much like Raphael Raven from Yoshi's Island.
I love the icy section, but it does have its problems. Those come from the spotlights in the last two parts. One of them confuses me, and the large one makes you only have a little bit to walk on. It also likes to crash the game, and I had to take drastic measures to avoid that in this video.
The fire sections were among my favorites in this level, besides one I'll get to later. I especially loved the rising and falling of the flames. Only major gripe I have here is Kamek. I hated how you had to spin-jump off of him just to get to the part before Bowser.
I couldn't show door #1 in this video, but I will show it when I make a video showing how to get the secret exit. I was able to show the others though. Each one of them has a unique challenge, but only the last one is truly frustrating. If I play this level again, I'm never going back there.
The fight with Bowser is just as it was in SMB3. Once that's out of the way, go through the door to face one final fight, and it's a long one.
Finally, we reach my favorite part of this level. The final fight in Bowser's Keep is based off of the final boss from Romancing Saga 2. The seven Koopalings merge together to form a beast I'm still impressed that someone, even Carol, could program a boss like this for a hack. The more you attack it, the stronger it gets. Once the background changes the beast will start moving. This is where it becomes even more difficult. It will use every attack it has learned so far, and it will take a long time to take him down. Once you do though, it is a satisfying feeling.
I hope everyone enjoys this updated version of an older video. It feels great to be playing this hack again. Next Brutal Mario video will be for Wily's Revenge.
