I’ve recently been accepted as a Youth Trainer for the 2019 Extreme Mustang Makeover. I am thrilled to have the privilege to work with, learn from, and train another one of the amazing mustangs, with the goal helping them to learn the skills they need in order to live successfully in our human world, and to raise awareness of their beauty, versatility, and trainability!

My goal is to gain Divas trust from a distance. She is scared and threatened, and I want to avoid pushing her to the point where she kicks into fight mode and becomes dangerous. Rather, by using the language which horses best understand, I am able to draw her to me, by pressing into her comfort zone and then backing away, (behaving like a curious horse) drawing her into me rather than stalking closer and closer (like a predator waiting to pounce), which would push her away. By using natural equine body language patterns I am able to get her to switch from trying to flee and escape to following me & trying to get a sniff of me. I let her get close then move away to pique her curiosity. If she gets bored or walks away, then I move in closer until she feels uncomfortable and threatened enough that she needs to look at me to assess the threat.

Repeating this process and rewarding her by giving her space was very effective, and within about 3-7 hours I was able to rub her all over and remove her neck tag, this making her adoption and new name official, symbolizing the beginning of her new life as a member of the family!

Just because I can touch her does not mean it will be easy from here, but it is a great start to the journey we have ahead of us.

My mission is to become a better person and grow in my journey to true horsemanship in order to improve the life of every horse I can, by learning to help, handle, and train them. I enjoy working with and learning from my own horses, as well as any other horse I get the opportunity to handle. I appreciate and enjoy a wide variety of riding disciplines, and am devoted to learning as much as I can about all things "horse". I am always looking for new ways to improve my horsemanship skills, striving to improve and learn to work with horses in the most natural, effective ways possible, ultimately to help horses and humans to find hope and inspiration!
