Hi everyone, I’m Reha. Welcome to episode 9 of our series on Schoenberg’s Theory of Harmony.
In this lesson, we continue building on what we’ve learned about harmonic progressions. We start by looking at how the bass line can guide the direction of chords. Schoenberg divides bass motion into two types: ascending progressions, where the next chord overtakes the previous one, and descending progressions, where the first chord gives way to the next. We’ll talk about what these really mean, both in terms of sound and musical function.
Next, we introduce different kinds of cadences — how music can come to a natural or deceptive close. We explain full cadences, cadential 6/4 chords, deceptive cadences, and why not all music needs to end on the tonic. Schoenberg also reminds us that rhythm and melody can help create a sense of closure, sometimes even better than harmony alone.
Finally, we talk about how to connect chords that don’t share common tones, and when you can start relaxing the rules about seventh chords. From this point on, your ear becomes an important guide.
If you’d like to practice writing harmonic progressions with cadences, feel free to try it in different keys. Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in the next video!
