Making shellac from shellac flakes is pretty straightforward. Here's a simple step-by-step guide:
Materials Needed:
Shellac flakes
Denatured alcohol (or ethanol, depending on your location)
Glass jar with a tight-fitting lid
Stirring stick or spoon
Measuring cup or scale (optional)
Steps:
Measure the Shellac Flakes:
Typically, the ratio is about 2 parts flakes to 1 part alcohol by weight, but it can vary depending on the desired thickness.
Add Flakes to the Jar:
Place the measured shellac flakes into your glass jar.
Pour in Alcohol:
Add the denatured alcohol to the jar. For a standard finish, use about twice the volume of flakes (e.g., 1 oz flakes with 2 oz alcohol).
Stir or Shake:
Seal the jar tightly and stir or shake gently. The flakes will start to dissolve. If they don't dissolve immediately, give it some time and occasionally shake.
Wait for Dissolution:
Let the mixture sit for several hours to overnight, shaking occasionally, until all the flakes are fully dissolved. The resulting liquid is your shellac solution.
Strain (Optional):
For a smooth finish, strain the shellac through a fine mesh or cheesecloth to remove any undissolved particles.
Store Properly:
Keep your shellac in a sealed container, away from heat and direct sunlight. It’s best to label it with the date and concentration.
Tips:
Adjust the concentration depending on your needs — more alcohol for a thinner solution, less for a thicker finish.
Shellac solutions can thicken over time, so you might need to add a bit more alcohol if it becomes too viscous.
Safety Note: Always work in a well-ventilated area and handle alcohol with care, as it’s flammable.
