This is a conversation that I had with Dr.Samuel J. Stellpflug, MD (BJJ Blackbelt) and fellow stroke survivor Josh Vera (BJJ Blackbelt) regarding the recent press and comments that have been made regarding strokes in Brazilian Jiu - Jitsu on the internet and in online forums. Over the last few years Sam has begun to blend his cardiovascular and brain perfusion research background with his jiu jitsu background and has embarked on a number of academic projects related to the safety of sportive chokes as discussed in this interview. This conversation will be the first of many more discussions with to come with Sam as more information about strokes in BJJ and new case studies continue to surface.
Samuel J. Stellpflug, MD is a Faculty Emergency Medicine physician and Director of Clinical Toxicology at Regions Hospital in Saint Paul, MN.
