Fukuoka (福岡市) is the capital city of Fukuoka Prefecture, situated on the northern shore of the Japanese island of Kyushu. It is the most populous city on the island, followed by Kitakyushu. It is the largest city and metropolitan area west of Keihanshin. The city was designated on April 1, 1972. Greater Fukuoka, with a population of 2.5 million people (2005 census), is part of the heavily industrialized Fukuoka–Kitakyushu zone.

As of 2015, Fukuoka is Japan's sixth-largest city, having passed the population of Kobe. In July 2011, Fukuoka surpassed the population of Kyoto. Since the founding of Kyoto in 794, this marks the first time that a city west of the Kinki region has a larger population than Kyoto. In ancient times, however, the area near Fukuoka, the Chikushi region, was thought by some historians to have possibly been even more influential than the Yamato region.

Tenjin is one of the most popular downtown areas in all of Kyushu. Throughout Tenjin, you can find brand name stores along with big appliance, department, and drug stores. In Tenjin, you will also find places of leisure. Tenjin has many parks that offer a place to take a break and enjoy the city atmosphere. You will see many people relaxing and enjoying their time outside! If you turn down an unexpected path or decide to take a small detour throughout your trip in Tenjin, you can also find pieces of Fukuoka's history.

Gokoku Shrine - In the first year of the Meiji era, the former feudal lords of the prefecture, including the lord of Fukuoka, Kuroda Nagatomo, established a shōkonsha and held a ritual to honor the people who suffered from the national crisis during the Meiji Restoration.

The Otorii of Gokoku Shrine is one of its biggest symbols. The Otorii is made of cypress with a height of 13 m and a diameter of 160 cm. It was cut out from Taiwan and brought to Hakata Port. Because of the size of the tree, it was impossible to transport it by car at that time, so it was transported by a pulley system.
