Let It Be stands as one of The Beatles' most well-known and beloved songs in their catalogue, written by Paul in late 1968.
Paul was inspired by a dream he had in late 1968, in which his late mother Mary came to him with gentle advice: “It was great to see her because that’s a wonderful thing about dreams — you actually are reunited with that person for a second. It was very emotional. She seemed to say to me, ‘It’ll be all right. Just let it be.’” Paul later adressed the religious meaning of the line "Mother Mary comes to me", stating he didn't intend it to be religious but that people could view it that way if they wanted.
McCartney first introduced Let It Be to the band in early January 1969 at Twickenham. The band rehearsed the track extensively through the Get Back sessions, but settled to officialy record it on January 31, the final day of filming Get Back. The band recorded 28 takes, and decided that Take 27 should be used. For three months, the official version of Let It Be was this take, without overdubs.
On April 30 1969, George returned to Let It Be to record a brand new solo using his Telecaster plugged through a Leslie. This solo would eventually be released on the single version of the track. The track was left on the shelves for the remainder of 1969. Final overdubs were added on January 4th 1970 : Paul wiped John's bass part and recorded a brand new one, added maracas, Wurlitzer and recorded brand new backing vocals with his wife Linda and George. George also recorded another solo with his Casino (notice how the F-holes are taped to prevent feedback! 29:10 ). George Martin added a horns and cello arrangement, and Ringo finally did some tom and snare overdubs.
Let It Be was the final single release by The Beatles before Paul announced to the world that the band had split up. It reached high numbers in the charts instantly and remains a favorite among casual and die-hard fans.
