Today was my LEAST favorite day of the Cannonball due to physical fatigue and the roads that we traveled. I know South Dakota is renowned for having great motorcycle roads, but we only experienced a little of that today... it felt more like a job than a scenic ride. The paved roads were reasonably scenic but were very long, flat, and mind-numbingly dull. Many of the gravel sections we traveled were exceptionally rough.

Unfortunately, on this day, we lost several scooters and riders on the gravel sections. Portions of the gravel road were unmaintained and had washboards with ruts and 4-6" deep troughs. Most scooters (including our Cubs) only have about 3" of suspension travel, so that means we were bottoming out over EVERY bump and washboard ripple. We were riding jackhammers down the road for miles at a time. 😒

Despite all the trials and tribulations, we completed the route with perfect scorecards again. The "Stay USA Hotel & Suites" in Hot Springs was disappointing due to hotel management and other issues. The manager (dressed in a t-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops) yelled and cursed at our group and accused the riders of vandalizing his property. He insisted that we park our scooters behind the hotel where they couldn't be seen from the road! Uhhh... NOPE, we don't think so! We renamed this place the "Stay Away USA Hotel". 🤣
