“Today’s Black History Moment is about the Tignon.
In the late 1700s, in Louisiana, Black women were ordered by law to cover their hair.
The tignon law was meant to limit their beauty, their freedom, and their presence.
But our ancestors did what we’ve always done.
They transformed restriction into royalty.
Black women wrapped their hair in bold fabrics, rich colors, and elegant styles—turning the tignon into a symbol of pride, creativity, and quiet resistance.
What was meant to hide us…
ended up highlighting our power.
This is why we honor the Tignon Queen—
because even when the world tried to silence Black women,
we still showed up crowned.”

Full Lyrics To The Song:
“Tignon Queens: Wrapped in Power! Wrapped in Grace!
🌺
🎤 Verse 1 – Rap (smooth bass + light drums
They feared your elegance,
your rising social climb,
Your hair spoke royalty
that they couldn’t undermine.
So they wrapped you in rules,
signed oppression with a pen—
But a queen makes magic
every time they say “you can’t.”
🎺 Pre-Chorus – Jazz
They tried to hide your crown…
They tried to hold you down…
But a Black queen turns a burden
into something world-renowned.
🎶 Chorus – Soul/Jazz
You’re a Tignon Queen… wrapped in power, wrapped in grace.
Bold colors shoutin’ freedom, patterns dancin’ on your face.
Oh, they wrote that law in 1786—
but you rewrote the story with creativity and wit.
Tignon Queens… turning limits into flowers.
Wrapped in soul, wrapped in truth, wrapped in power.
🎤 Verse 2 – Rap
They said, “Cover up that beauty,
it distracts too much.”
But a queen’s glow is cosmic,
and they couldn’t stop the touch.
Scarves tied like sunrise,
fabric fierce and alive,
Every wrap a revolution—
every knot helped you thrive.
Purple, gold, and crimson,
threads painted with pride,
Walking past the law-makers
with your head lifted high.
The Tignon Law built fences
but queens built wings—
A Black woman makes elegance
out of the smallest things.
🎺 Pre-Chorus – Jazz
You turned their rule around…
Made art from the profound…
Turned a mandate into magic
that the world still wears now.
🎶 Chorus – Soul/Jazz
You’re a Tignon Queen… wrapped in power, wrapped in grace.
Bold colors shoutin’ freedom, patterns dancin’ on your face.
Oh, they wrote that law in 1786—
but they couldn’t stop the beauty that your spirit would fix.
Tignon Queens… turning limits into flowers.
Wrapped in soul, wrapped in truth, wrapped in power.
🌟 Bridge
“They thought the Tignon would hide us…
But it crowned us instead.
They thought it would silence our presence…
But it amplified our tread.
1786 was the year
Black women proved once again—
You can legislate the fabric,
but never the queen within.”
🎶 Final Chorus
Tignon Queens… wrapped in power, wrapped in flame.
They tried to steal your beauty but you rose just the same.
From 1786 to forever your shine remains—
Black woman glory… history speaks your name.
🎷 Outro
“Wrapped in tignons…
Wrapped in legacy…
Wrapped in power.”
Intro – Spoken Jazz (soft trumpet & upright bass)
“In 1786, a law was signed
meant to shrink the shine of Black women…
The Tignon Law.
A mandate to cover their hair—
to hide their beauty, their influence,
their irresistible, unstoppable glow.
But when you tell a Black woman to dim…
she finds a way to blaze.”
1786 hit hard, Tignon Law took aim,
Tryna regulate a queen, tryna put out her flame.
Free or enslaved, didn’t matter your place—
Your crown was too radiant, too bold for their space.Welcome to Black History Moments, where we honor our past, our power, and our people.”
