You can meet a thousand people and still have no one you can actually call on...
That is the difference between networking, relationship building, and social capital. They are not the same, and treating them as if they are is exactly why so many leaders stay tired, overextended, and under-supported.
Here is the real distinction:
📌 Networking is about volume. It’s reach over relationship.
📌 Relationship building is intentional. This is where consistency, conversation, and proximity start to form trust.
📌 Social capital is the return on your investment. This is when you can ask for support, make a request, or receive opportunities because your deposits have created real equity.
Most people stop at networking. Some step into relationship building. But very few ever experience the full benefit of leveraging their social capital. Usually, because the deposits were never made, or because when the time comes to ask for support, they hold back.
