While some predicted the second phase of the Covid Inquiry would be a hit job, the report released today broadly endorsed the former Government's handling of the pandemic.
The Royal Commission of Inquiry said "This report concludes that Aotearoa New Zealand did well in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic".
But the report highlighted some failings. It confirmed the Auckland lockdown of late 2021 went on four days longer than recommended by the then Director-General of Health, Ashley Bloomfield.
It also found health experts had advised that under-18s in work shouldn't be mandated to have two vaccine doses because of the risk of the heart condition myocarditis, but that advice wasn't passed on to ministers.
The economic approach was also criticised because policies around stimulus and inflation became unaligned. Adam Hollingworth has more.
