The goal of this analysis is to understand the wind pattern near the Fort Point Channel, separating the two sections of the city, and discuss the findings. Find out how airflow through the Seaport District of Boston affects pedestrians through online CFD simulation.
Every day, thousands of pedestrians, tourists, and business professionals walk from the South Station Train terminal, located downtown, into the Seaport area of Boston and back across the bridges to return to the train station. This section of Boston is completely exposed to the ocean, so it is common for wind speed to reach 15+ m/s (~34 mph). Further compounding the problem, wind speeds increase drastically in unobstructed sections of the cityscape, such as on main roads or in canals, due to the Venturi effect.
