This is a subject that can ruffle some feathers. Regardless, we can’t ignore the conversation. Unintentional discharges are largely preventable if safety rules are followed, along with consequences for failing to adhere to safety rules.
The question we need to answer is when can you put your finger on the trigger. There will be plenty of sound off with an abstract answer. Some will put more thought into it and even some will ignore the question all together. The ability to recognize danger is an acquired skill. Any type of incident is usually not the result of a single issue. It is the culmination of many small issues totaling a major issue. Ignoring this issue will not make it go away nor will it improve our community.
An accidental discharge is defined by us as a discharge that places the round in front of the next yard line from where the discharge occurred. So, if you were on the 25 yard line and the round hit somewhere’s in front of the 15 yard line we will give the shooter the benefit of the doubt and call that an accidental discharge or AD. In this case, the reprimand is less severe and generally results in the student unloading and taking a break from the duration of the drill or session. This will always be the lead instructors call and I will back them.
A negligent discharge occurs inside that yard line or literally on the firing line. The round impacted what we call danger close or God forbid struct a person. In this case, the shooter violated the safety rules. The two biggest being failing to maintain muzzle discipline and failing to keep their finger off the trigger. In this case, the shooter will unload and be dismissed from class. We follow up with a thorough debrief, but find it better to wait until after the class.
How do we define ready to fire. This is the process that must be followed. It starts by locating the target, identifying the target, moving the gun from point of carry to the target and confirming the sights are on target. Then the finger can move to the trigger. That’s a lot that has to happen, but on the square range there are liberties being taken for the sake of speed. A dangerous combination.
