Soundproofing is an essential part of a lot of sound system installs, but it also has a wide range of benefits in non-sound system installations as well!

This Ford Transit has had a full soundproofing installation, utilising the 3mm layer and the panel liner, across almost every surface within the van.

But what is soundproofing, and why would you use so much of it in the vehicle?

Soundproofing is provided by Skinz in three different forms - a 2mm sheet, a 3mm sheet and a panel liner material.

The 2mm sheet is provided in larger sheets, and weighs less than the 3mm layer, for use when weight consideration is important, such as in tailgates, or the lifting doors on a Lamborghini Aventador. The 2mm sheet is visually identified as it is a black material.

The 3mm sheet is around the size of an A4 page, and silver in colour. This is the most common size used by us on all installs, as it provides an excellent level of sound deadening when applied to the vehicle.

The panel liner is a much larger sheet, which is very similar to a foam material. The panel liner is utilised on top of soundproofing to assist in managing condensation, and is most commonly used in larger vehicles like Land Rover Defenders and vans, such as in this Ford Transit.

While these sheets may look large, they are all able to be cut and reshaped to fit into all required gaps - such as around curved edges, within door panels and always cut around manufacturer components and switches to ensure complete serviceability.

The skinz sheets have an adhesive layer on the rear, and when we apply the soundproofing we heat up the adhesive material to make the sheet both more flexible, but also increasing the stickiness. Once applied to the panel, we then roll the soundproofing onto the panel while still warm to ensure a flawless fit.

If you're curious about weight - the 3mm sheet is 515g, so some weight is added to the vehicle when installing, but the benefits far outweight the additional weight.

What soundproofing does is increases the density of panels on the bodywork, which is incredibly noticeably when gently knocking against a soundproofed area after a non soundproofed area. By increasing this panel density, it does a few key things:
General resonations and resulting rattles from movement on the panels are hugely reduced.
Road noise is greatly reduced by the increased density of the panels, creating a quieter environment.
When installing a sound system, the material creates a much better acoustic environment for sound and air to bounce against, in comparison to a bare metal panel. This is due to both the material used, but also the pattern applied into the material for dispersion of sound.

Additionally, soundproofing is excellent at managing heat within a vehicle - which is exactly why this owner has soundproofed to the level shown. The vehicle will be relocating to Bermuda, where the temperature is much warmer. The soundproofing is able to keep the heat out and the temperature consistent, which means the inside of the van will be a much more tolerable environment for working within.
