Possidi Beach in Halkidiki, Greece

Описание: If you look at a map or satellite image of Kassandra, it resembles a sort of spindly-looking stocking-wearing foot pointing in a southeasterly direction. To the west, at the end of the heel, is the small resort village of Possidi. At the very tip of the heel is the sandy point of land known as Cape Possidi. It has a lighthouse set back from the water, at about the point where vegetation starts growing.

The Old Lighthouse of Possidi
Built in 1864, the lighthouse of Possidi still stands despite the endless tides that have caused several ground transformations over the decades.

Once found at the edge point of Cape Possidi, the lighthouse is now found farther from the water – due to the constant shifting of the sand and the playful patterns the sea waves and tides create.

The lighthouse of Possidi is one of the greatest landmarks in Kassandra, Halkidiki, and worth visiting even at night time.

It's stands 14,5 meters tall in an area stripped of dense bushes. Although the lighthouse nowadays stands closer to the local green area than the shore, the region is popular for its peculiar (and may we add fantastic) beach.

The cape of Possidi is unique in the sense that there’s a long piece of land that creates a point that goes into the sea – hence, the name Cape of Possidi or Miti of Possidi. It’s a lovely beach to visit in the morning, but also a spectacular site for an evening stroll since the lighthouse is in operation.

In spite of its old age, the lighthouse of Possidi is still in use today. It was out of operation for a long time and until the lighthouse network was regrouped and switched it back on in 1944.

Only a short drive away from Hotel Kriopigi, this whitewashed lighthouse with the Colonial architectural style is worth visiting.

After all, not many lighthouses are still in use today and not all of them are accessible, while their importance is remarkable throughout history.
