Kipling Is Ill With Double Pneumonia; Noted Writer’s Condition ‘Anxious;’ Says King George’s Physician Announces. London, December 3, 1925, by the Associated Press. Rudyard Kipling, the noted writer, is lying ill with double pneumonia in the little village of Burwash, in Sussex.
He passed a fairly good night and his condition today was unchanged. He is being attended, among others, by Lord Dawson, physician to King George (the Fifth), who was called into consultation yesterday by Mr. Kipling’s regular physician. Lord Dawson described the condition of the patient as “anxious but not dangerous.”
When the announcement was made that Mr. Kipling was ill, it was said his condition was not serious. His friends, however, were somewhat alarmed, knowing his disinclination to be in the public eye and his love for almost hermit-like privacy.
It was Sunday evening that Mr. Kipling first complained of pains in the chest but it was not until Monday that a physician was called. The doctor found that the disease had developed to the point that he thought it wise to summon Lord Dawson.
Mrs. Kipling, aided by two nurses, is constantly at the bedside of her distinguished husband, who once before, in 1899, in New York, was critically ill with pneumonia. Josephine Kipling, one of his daughters, contracted the disease and died. Another daughter, Elsie Kipling, who is the wife of Captain George Bambridge of England, also fell ill with pneumonia but recovered. John Kipling, a young son, escaped the disease and was killed while fighting with the British forces in the World War.
