1880s 'Hoofed Urn' Mortise Lock Restoration | Random Restoration

Описание: Howdy all! Today I'll be restoring this rare antique 1880s double key mortise lock set which was manufactured by Norwalk Lock Co. Norwalk named this the Hoofed Urn design. The old old cast iron entry lock I purchased for this restoration was not very rusty, though the interior components had the usual small layer of rust that would have to be tended to.

I started this restoration video by disassembling the lock. I quickly moved on to cutting keys prior to paint stripping. Since there was japanning on the lock, boiling paint off in a crockpot wasn't an option, so I chose the old school route of using boring old paint stripper. I quickly moved onto cutting keys With everything disassembled I threw all the hardware into the rust remover. For rust removal I use Evapo-Rust, though there are many options out there. Next up in the restoration I moved on to abrasive buffing and wire wheeling all the parts.

With nothing to repaint on this old mortise lock I quickly moved on to painting the cast iron lock before it started to rust. Following this was many hours of sanding all the bronze parts. Then it was time for polishing all the door knobs, backplate, lock faceplate, thumb turn, keyhole escutcheon, and rose. Once polished, I moved on to lacquering. I lacquered all this bronze hardware with an airbrush and a cellulose nitrate lacquer. After drying for a week, the recessed areas of all the hardware was painted with a semi gloss black paint, though I've since moved to using more of a matte black on hardware with similar designs.
