Living in Scotland | The Country That Lost Its Highlands | 4K Documentary
In the upper valley of Strathnaver, on the far north coast of Sutherland, the wind has been crossing the same empty floor for two centuries. Between 1812 and 1820, the estates of the Countess of Sutherland — at the time the largest private landholding in the British Isles — were systematically cleared of their tenant population. By 1820, around fifteen thousand Cheviot sheep grazed where the townships had been. Scotland is one of the wealthiest nations in Europe, but its northern half holds fewer people now than the British census of 1841 first counted there — a landscape made empty by decision.
A school bus crosses the Highland Boundary Fault at half past eight on a Tuesday in February, carrying eleven children from one geography of Scotland into the other where they will spend the day. The fault, a 150-mile geological line, is invisible here. The country changes anyway.
At Mallaig harbour, a creel boat ties up at the pier, and three men in oilskins unload langoustines from a night north of the Sound of Sleat.
