12. 09. 2020. Srednjovekovna tvrđava na brdu Gradina, u selu Erčege, na planini Javor / The Medieval fortress at Gradina Hill, in the village of Erčege, on Mt. Javor
It is unknown when the fortress at Gradina peak, in the village of Erčege was built, but it is assumed that it was in mid XV century, on the foundations of an earlier, smaller fortification built by ancient Romans. Coins from the reign of Emperor Valens (328 378) and Gratian (367-383) found at the site confirm the presence of the Romans. Legends dating back to the 19th century say that the fortress was built by Duke Stefan Vukčić Kosača, after whom the village of Erčege was named, but research has shown that was almost certainly not the case. The existing fortification, as well as the Roman one before it, probably served to observe a very important road through the village of Erčege, which was used since the prehistoric times, as evidenced by a large tumulus (funeral mound) called Kraljev Grob (King's Tomb), located near the road. In the Middle Ages, the road was a caravan route and passed through Erčege to Golija, and then towards Sjenica and further to the south. Archaeological excavations of the fortress fort were carried out in 2009. by Dejan Bulić and Srđan Katic, when a considerable number of archeological finds were discovered that tell us of life in the fortification.
