FixEight is a classic vertical scrolling run 'n gun arcade shooter from Toaplan, that was first launched to arcades in 1992.
The game is thought to be the spiritual successor to Toaplan's earlier arcade shooter "Out Zone" from 1990, even sharing many of the same game mechanics.
The game's story follows the fictional alien race known as the Gozzu, who're attempting to take control of the galaxy. In response to the invasion, the Galactic Federation dispatches 8 mercenaries to the planet Fortuna in a bid to defeat the evil alien invaders.
Players took on the role of one of eight possible characters, each with their own unique weapons sets. Alternate weapon upgrades can be obtained by picking up P icons and walking over a series of panels that are laid out across each of the game's 7 stages. Each P icon picked up increases the strength of your weapons, and up to 5 can obtained at a time.
There's also special weapon sets that can be unlocked by picking up the question mark icons. The icons can also unlock additional abilities for your character, such as speed increases, a shield, increased power, and a 5,000 point bonus.
Besides the standard weapons, all characters have a bomb attack, and you can carry up to 10 bombs at a single time.
There's two different types of weapons sets for each of the characters, with some being omni-directional (Type A), while others only shoot vertically (Type B).
Picking up the gold bars and statues provides bonus points.
Unlike Out Zone, there's no checkpoints and players respawn in the exact same spot they died. When your character respawns, all upgrades default to the original weapons and power-ups are lost.
Beating the game unlocks an increased difficulty setting.
While the majority of the game follows the typical run 'n gun scenario, in several of the game's stages, players take control of an air bike, where the game transforms to an all out vertical scrolling shoot 'em up.
The Type B vertical weapons don't feel very useful, especially given the fact that enemies often attack from the sides and even from behind you. Likewise, the omni-directional weapons tend to have a much wider spread and can annihilate more enemies and appear to be more powerful.
With the vertically facing weapons, players will often find themselves being attacked from all sides, and with no way to fire upon enemy assailants. Its honestly very frustrating to have all sorts of enemies firing at you and no way to defend yourself.
Overall, the game was a solid, yet challenging arcade shooter. There's no quick wins in this game, as its typical to be bombarded by enemy fire coming from all sides, but the game does allow you to continue where you left off without having to restart the entire level, a feature that's typical of arcade shoot 'em ups.
While the original arcade version is shown here, there's also a slightly beefed up PC port of this game available on Steam today: https://store.steampowered.com/app/20...
