Is Diet Soda contributing to your memory lapses?
Aspartame, the thing that puts the “diet” in diet soda, can lead to methanol buildup. Possible symptoms of methanol buildup include headaches, memory lapses, learning problems, anxiety, irritability, and depression—especially in people with previous mental health issues.
If you’re dealing with any of these, it might be time to take a break from aspartame and see if your symptoms improve!
Here are a few places you’ll find aspartame hiding:
→ Diet sodas: One of the most popular places you’ll find aspartame is in diet sodas, where it replaces sugar to reduce calorie counts without sacrificing sweetness.
→Sugar-free gum: Many brands of sugar-free chewing gum use aspartame to deliver a sweet taste without the sugar.
→ Low-calorie desserts: Things like sugar-free ice cream, jellies, and puddings often use aspartame.
→ Light yogurts and flavored water: These often contain aspartame to keep the sugar content low while maintaining a pleasant taste.
→ Tabletop sweeteners: Aspartame is found in many sugar substitutes used at the dining table, like Equal and NutraSweet.
→ Pharmaceutical products: Some over-the-counter and prescription medications, especially chewable or liquid medications, use aspartame to improve taste.
If you’re worried that aspartame could be causing your symptoms, test it out yourself by removing all aspartame from your diet for 30 days to see if your symptoms go away. If you’re not sure, try reintroducing aspartame and pay careful attention to see if you experience any symptoms.
I know that it can be hard to just stop drinking diet sodas. Try some of our favorite healthier soda alternatives like @drinkolipop @zevia or @drinkpoppi
