There are microorganisms that can survive the harsh radiation and vacuum of space, and this makes them a real concern for scientists. If microbes managed to hitch a ride to another planet or moon, they could compromise the scientific findings we made there, and even be dangerous to any native life that might be present. Sample return missions could even endanger us on Earth if they were to bring something unexpected back with them. This video covers the Planetary Protection Guidelines, forward contamination and backward contamination, and the questions asked to protect Earth and the Solar System.
