Exploring the Responsibility to Protect Doctrine: Perspectives from the Global South

Описание: The United Nations in the Arab World Program at the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs held a lecture and discussion "Exploring the Responsibility to Protect Doctrine: Perspectives from the Global South" by Dr. Rama Mani.

The talk addressed the "Responsibility to Protect" and International Intervention as it relates to the Arab World. It discussed the findings of Dr. Mani's co-edited book, Responsibility to Protect: Cultural Perspectives from the Global South with Thomas Weiss (Routledge 2011). Dr. Mani used a comparative approach drawing on her experience on the subject and her work on transitional justice, conflict transformation and peace building.

Dr. Rama Mani is a Councilor of the World Future Council, and a Board member of the Foundation for the Future (Amman) that supports civil society and democracy across the Middle East. She is a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for International Studies at the University of Oxford. She was formerly Executive Director of the International Centre for Ethnic Studies in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Director of the Global Peace and Security Course at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, Africa Strategy Manager for war economies, based in Ethiopia and Uganda, and Senior External Relations Officer for the Commission on Global Governance. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, and authored Beyond Retribution: Seeking Justice in the Shadows of War (Polity/Blackwell 2002/2007).
