On Sept 18th 1972 THE IRISH ROVERS were renewed for a second CBC network series in Canada and their first guests were the legendary Clancy Brothers. In Part 1, the Rovers songs were "Black Velvet Band" and a medley of "Haul Away Joe" & "The Bonnie Ship the Diamond", while the Clancy Bros sang the Irish/Australian folk song "Wild Colonial Boy," Jack Duggan who "robbed from the rich to feed the poor" until he was fatally wounded in an ambush.. Scottish whaling ship the Diamond in 1819 was crushed flat by great walls of ice in the Davis Strait between Greenland and Canada although the crew escaped. The original Nonsuch ketch (meaning Unequalled) sailed into Hudson's Bay in 1668-69, the first trading voyage for the Hudson's Bay Company. The Clancy Bros were Patrick "Paddy" Clancy, Tom Clancy, younger brother Liam Clancy, and Louis Killen. They were hugely popular during the American Folk Music Revival in the 1960s influencing the likes of Bob Dylan who hung out with them: "Liam was always my favourite ballad singer. I just never heard anyone as good." Happy St Patrick's Day!
There will be more from the Rovers & Clancys in Part 2.
Keep up with THE IRISH ROVERS! !
