The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an active spell of monsoon weather across large parts of the country, with a western disturbance set to intensify rainfall, thunderstorms, squally winds and hailstorm activity over northwest India till June 13.
According to the IMD, a western disturbance positioned over northern Pakistan and adjoining regions is interacting with multiple cyclonic circulations and troughs over north India, creating favourable conditions for widespread pre-monsoon and monsoon activity. The weather system is expected to bring rain and thunderstorms to Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand over the next few days.
Strong Storms Expected in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi
Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh are likely to witness a sharp increase in thunderstorm, squall and hailstorm activity between June 11 and 13. IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, squally winds of 60-70 kmph gusting up to 80 kmph, and isolated hailstorms on June 11 and 12.
The weather office said heatwave conditions currently prevailing over Punjab and Haryana are likely to abate from June 11 as cloud cover and rainfall increase under the influence of the western disturbance. Maximum temperatures, which touched 46°C in several districts, are expected to fall by 4-5°C during the next four days.
Delhi-NCR is also expected to see thunderstorms, lightning, dust storms and gusty winds over the next three days. IMD has predicted strong winds reaching 50-60 kmph on June 11, with temperatures likely to drop sharply by June 12 as rain-bearing clouds spread across the region.
