Verne Reynolds 48 Etudes #25
Finally, the interval etudes are finished and we’re getting on with etudes for etudes’ sake. Starting with #25 and the next 3, are 4 very nice low horn etudes I would recommend putting into you repertoire of reading exercises. When you have been working hard in a long practice session (probably on something higher, faster, louder…), it’s good to insert some low and relaxed playing to release tensions and tightness from the intense muscular exertion of hard playing. These 4 fit the bill perfectly (of course, there are many things to play to do this, but VR has conveniently out 4 in a row right here) and once you learn them, you will realize the benefits of this low playing. #25 offers excellent challenges for making good music. Don’t approach this one pedantically, but rather from a more sensitive and lyrical concept. While time is important, try not to feel metronomic, especially at phrase moments. Play each not with some form of expression or direction and you will create a very nice performance. Pay particular attention to the very subtle dynamic nuances and make yourself meet the challenges of creating a noticeable difference at every single opportunity. Line 4 is a perfect example. There is very little loud playing in #25, so embrace this--really explore your soft playing and work on the technique of always moving your air through the slurs and not using your embouchure to change the pitches. This is a great etude to practice on your mouthpiece to enhance your air motion and depend less on chop muscle motion. When doing this, allow yourself to glide between the notes so you can really feel how the air and vowel sounds are working for you.
