Padstow lifeboat rescues capsized yacht with 80-year-old skipper

The volunteers onboard the RNLI all-weather lifeboat from Padstow were called away from a routine exercise on Wednesday 29 August to go to the aid of the crew of a capsized yacht who had put out a distress call.
When the lifeboat crew arrived on scene at 6.25pm, they found the 80-year-old skipper had managed to get back on the boat after it had been knocked down, but his fellow sailor was missing in the water.
The RNLI volunteers immediately started a search and recovered him 10 minutes later. He was taken on board the lifeboat for medical assistance then airlifted to hospital by the search and rescue helicopter crew from RNAS Culdrose. They also airlifted the yacht's skipper.
The weather conditions were challenging with a force six wind and a moderate to rough westerly swell.
