Born in Bakau, Gambia, Oumar’s journey began far from the waves. As a child, he couldn’t swim and was afraid of the ocean. Everything changed when he began working in the fishing village of Tanji, helping local fishermen. Surrounded by the sea every day, he slowly faced his fear and built a connection with the water.

His path led him to Ngor Island in Senegal, where he lived for a few years and discovered the surfing culture. What started as curiosity quickly became a calling. He learned how to surf in Senegal and surfing became more than a sport for Oumar — it became a way to inspire, to grow, and to create opportunities for others.

After returning to The Gambia 🇬🇲, he founded his own surf school at Senegambia Beach, aiming to teach local youth confidence, discipline, and respect for the ocean. Despite limited resources, setbacks, and many personal challenges, he continued to push forward. There are moments when he feels tempted to take the dangerous “Backway” route to Europe, an illegal and life-threatening journey many feel forced to consider to make a better life for themselves. Instead, Oumar chooses to stay and invest in his home. He believes he must make succes in his own country first.

Today, his biggest dream is to create the first official Surf Federation in The Gambia. He believes that surfing can empower young people, create jobs, creates oportunities to travel overseas, enter competitions, boost tourism and put The Gambia on the global surf map. His story is one of resilience, faith, and unbreakable belief in a future built at home.
