Many pianists struggle with tension, discomfort, poor sound, or lack of control not because they lack talent, but because they’re simply sitting at the piano the wrong way.
In this video, I show you exactly how not to sit at the piano first, followed by three correct piano postures that support freedom, balance, and better sound.
Seeing the contrast between wrong and right posture makes it much easier to understand what your body is actually doing when you play.
Bad piano posture often looks subtle. You might be sitting too close, too far, collapsing in the lower back, lifting the shoulders, locking the neck, or perching tensely on the bench.
These habits may feel normal, but over time they lead to neck tension, shoulder stiffness, restricted arm movement, and uneven dynamics.
Correct piano posture is not about sitting “upright” or forcing yourself to be stiff. Good posture at the piano is about balance, support, and ease of movement.
When you sit properly, your arms can move freely, your neck doesn’t overwork, and your sound becomes more controlled and expressive.
In this video, you’ll learn
What wrong piano posture looks like and why it causes problems
How to sit at the piano properly without forcing or overcorrecting
Three correct piano sitting positions that work for different bodies
How good posture helps with dynamics, control, and injury prevention
Many pianists think posture is about copying a fixed position, but real piano posture is dynamic.
The goal isn’t to hold yourself in place, it's to sit in a way that allows movement without tension. When posture is right, playing feels lighter, easier, and more natural.
If you’ve ever felt pain, stiffness, or fatigue while practicing, posture is one of the first things to look at.
Small changes in how you sit can make a huge difference in your technique, comfort, and long-term health as a pianist.
This video is especially helpful for
Beginner pianists learning proper piano posture
Intermediate and advanced pianists fixing tension habits
Pianists experiencing neck, shoulder, or back discomfort
Anyone who wants better sound and freedom at the piano
Good piano posture is not about perfection, it's about awareness and choice. Once you can recognize wrong posture, choosing a better sitting position becomes simple.
Watch closely, try the adjustments at your piano, and notice how your body and sound respond. Sitting correctly is the first step toward playing freely, comfortably, and confidently.
