In Episode 1, I land in Melbourne, pick up a BMW GSA, and begin riding the Great Ocean Road to photograph the first Australian rider.

Welcome to the first episode from my March–April 2025 journey in Australia, continuing my long-term multimedia series, The Motorcycle Portraits

The story begins at home in Nova Scotia and follows the long road to Melbourne — via Halifax, Toronto, and San Francisco — a 59-hour journey to the other side of the world. From there, I collect a BMW GSA 900, fit fresh Michelin Anakee tires, and set off along the legendary Great Ocean Road toward Adelaide.

Along the way, I photograph the first Australian subject of the trip, Andrew Barlow, while settling into a new bike, new gear, and some of the most spectacular coastal scenery on earth — the beginning of another chapter in a global search for the people whose lives are deeply connected to motorcycles.
