Coefficient of Coupling K
Coefficient of Coupling (k):
Definition:
The coefficient of coupling (k) measures how effectively two inductors (coils) are magnetically linked.
Formula:
k = M / √(L₁ × L₂)
Where:
M = Mutual inductance
L₁ = Self-inductance of coil 1
L₂ = Self-inductance of coil 2
Range:
0 ≤ k ≤ 1
k = 1 → Perfect coupling (100% magnetic linkage)
k = 0 → No coupling (0% magnetic linkage)
Meaning:
Higher k means stronger magnetic linkage between coils.
Lower k means weaker magnetic linkage.
Applications:
Transformers
Wireless charging
Inductive sensors
