Donald B. Levy, MD, Medical Director, Osher Clinical Center for Integrative Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, defines integrative medicine: a philosophy of healing that focuses on non-invasive therapies and lifestyle habits to enhance the body’s ability to heal. Integrative medicine includes therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic care and massage. At Brigham and Women’s Hospital, physicians at the Osher Clinical Center work collaboratively with physicians in other medical specialties to optimize patient care.
Dr. Levy notes that integrative medicine is particularly beneficial for patients with chronic health conditions such as persistent low back pain. Management of low back pain is a particular clinical focus of the Osher Clinical Center which is in the midst of conducting a long term research study comparing outcomes for patients who receive integrative care for chronic low back pain to those that receive typical medical care.
