There is a history of migration, spanning millennia, across the Indian Ocean between Asia, the Gulf, and Africa. However, in the past few decades, the politics of mobility across these regions has been
complicated due to modern international boundaries and ethnic formations. The new political economy of labor, which emerged after the discovery of fossil fuels in the Gulf, has created various opportunities along with new challenges for migrants across the Indian Ocean World.
On 21st August 2020, The Indian Ocean Working Group organized a webinar on Human Mobilities
Across the Indian Ocean: Prospects and Challenges. Moderated by Professor Uday Chandra, Assistant Professor of Government at Georgetown University in Qatar, the webinar discusses the prospects and challenges of the human mobilities in the Indian Ocean from the different vantage points of the panelists drawn from academia, activism, and journalism.
