When India imports LPG, it has to pay for shipping, insurance, port handling, bottling into cylinders, transportation across the country, and dealer commissions. All these add significant cost before it reaches consumers.
Also, LPG pricing in India is linked to government policies, not just the market. The government provides subsidies to certain groups, especially poor households under schemes like Ujjwala. This means some people get cylinders at much lower prices, and the system is designed to balance these costs.
Another reason is price control. LPG prices are not changed daily like petrol or diesel. When global prices go up, companies may sell at a loss for some time. When global prices come down, prices may not be reduced immediately. Over time, this helps keep prices stable for consumers.
Because of these factors, the government and oil companies do not always make large profits from LPG. A big part of the money collected goes into covering costs, supporting subsidies, and managing past losses, rather than pure profit.
