The Lada Niva, a Russian-made four-wheel-drive estate car, is one of the rarest cars in the UK, with only 55 believed to still be in use. The Niva was introduced in 1976 and was known for its ruggedness and off-road capabilities. It had a 1.6-litre engine and eight forward gears, with four for off-road use and four for the road. The Niva was imported to the UK starting in 1978, but sales ceased in 1998 due to emissions challenges and difficulties with obtaining right-hand-drive models. However, global sales of the Niva continued, reaching 650,000 by 2020. A slightly updated model called the Niva Legend is still in production. The Niva's lack of galvanization and lead-loading on the roof panel seams led to rust issues in many 1980s and 1990s models. However, well-maintained Nivas were praised for their reliability.
