The first spring tide (new moon on April 15) of the month coincided with a hot striper bite on the Raritan Bay, which has many folks thinking the second spring tide (full moon on April 29) of the month could really ignite the weakfish bite and hopefully usher in those long-awaited bluefish.
A few more weakies were reported in the past week, but it’s the first handful of drum in Great Bay that has folks scrambling to get their boats splashed this week. Big pre-spawn stripers have turned on in their regular haunts (think Susky Flats, upper Delaware Bay and along the Raritan Bay) while the surf side bite picked up the pace with more plentiful school fish.
If you’re looking to take advantage of the annual run of shad along the Delaware River, keep in mind the 8th Annual Bi-State Shad Tournament this weekend could make for heavy traffic as folks compete for what’s expected to be a $15,000 payout this year. Get away from the desk, grab your gear and get fishing while the getting is good!
