This Gregorian chant is based on the ancient prayer:
“Custodi me, Domine, ut pupillam oculi.”
“Guard me, O Lord, as the apple of your eye.”
The text comes from Psalm 17:8, a psalm of trust and divine protection, and has been used for centuries in the Divine Office as a prayer for God’s watchful care. In monastic life, such verses were often chanted repeatedly, allowing the words to settle deeply into the heart through stillness and quiet repetition.
This chant is presented in Gregorian Mode IV (Hypophrygian), a mode traditionally associated with gentleness, inward calm, and peaceful trust. The flowing, non-metered rhythm and monophonic vocal line reflect the authentic practice preserved in the Liber Usualis and the wider Gregorian chant tradition.
Gregorian chant was never intended as performance music. Its purpose is prayer — supporting contemplation, interior silence, and attentiveness to God’s presence.
This recording is especially suited for:
Prayer and meditation
Times of anxiety or uncertainty
Quiet reflection
Extended listening and interior stillness
🕯 May this ancient prayer of protection bring calm, reassurance, and peace.
