In 1991, Soviet cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev left Earth for a routine 5-month mission aboard the Mir space station. But while he was orbiting the planet, the Soviet Union collapsed. With no clear government, no funding, and no replacement crew, Krikalev was stranded in space for 311 days.
He circled Earth nearly 5,000 times, watched borders change from above, and returned to a world that was completely different from the one he had left behind. When he landed, the Soviet Union was gone, Kazakhstan was independent, and his home city had changed its name.
This incredible true story is why Sergei Krikalev is remembered as the “Last Soviet Citizen”.
