In this video, Dr. Ann Cheri Foxx performs a lumbar epidural steroid injection at Phoenix Spine and Joint Goodyear. Dr. Foxx is a Board Certified Anesthesiologist who is fellowship-trained and specializes in pain management. Epidural steroid injection is a good way to reduce back and leg pain caused by herniated discs and bone spurs. Epidural steroid injection takes just a few minutes. It is a safe way to relieve severe pain. The injection is done under x-ray guidance to make sure it's in the right place. You are awake during the procedure which is done in the ambulatory surgery center to avoid COVID-19 exposure at the hospital. The steroid medication lasts 100 hours but the effect can go on much longer. If numbing is used it can cause temporary weakness and numbness, but you will walk out of the surgery center under your own power. It's nice but not required to have someone drive you to the center.
Is it scary? Not when you have a doctor who is as awesome as Dr. Foxx! And we hope not after you've seen this video.
