Severe storms brought dangerous flash flooding to São Paulo, Brazil, on October 14, 2026. Heavy rainfall inundated the Anhangabaú tunnel in the heart of the city, leaving vehicles stranded and drivers seeking safety as water rose around them. Firefighters rescued four people from the flooded tunnel. Other roads and transport connections were affected, including areas near Terminal Bandeira and major central avenues.
Floodwater also entered access areas of the Japão-Liberdade and Paraíso metro stations. Metro authorities said train circulation was not interrupted by these incidents, although some auxiliary station equipment was affected. The storm caused widespread traffic disruption and emergency calls involving flooding, fallen trees, and structural damage. In Brasilândia, a woman died after a landslide during the heavy rain.
In this NationalStormReport coverage, we explain what happened, why urban flooding became so dangerous, and what officials reported about drainage systems and emergency response. We also look at the continuing risk of heavy rainfall and the challenges facing one of the world's largest cities.
