At MREH, Monty and I base our reviews on actual usage. And comparisons. This is the first video in a sub-series in my isolation series where I try to figure out what the best privacy screen protector is. Is it a coincidence that I’m starting this sub-series with 3M which was also my first and only privacy screen protector on this channel? No. That’s be design.

In fact, not much has changed between the iPhone 6 version and the iPhone 11 EXCEPT that Monty figured out how to review privacy screen protectors.

So in the next few minutes, I’m going to show you the angle of blackout, how many ways your screen blacks out, the coverage, hardness, brightness reduction, clarity and finally impact.

When it comes to the FOV before things get blacked out, I clocked the 3M Privacy film at 45 degrees. I figured this out by building a custom app that recorded the angle when the entire screen was blacked out with my super measuring tool called Edith.

Does the 3M Privacy Screen Protector completely black out your screen? No but out of my grouping of products, none did. This product comes close but not 100%.

When it comes to the # of ways the screen gets blacked out, going from left to right in portrait mode will black out the screen. When it comes to landscape mode, it only blacks out in one direction. So despite what the packaging says, if you want to share what you’re watching privately with somebody else, make sure they’re sitting/standing to your left.

My biggest issue with this product, and it hasn’t changed between 2014 and now is that the edges of the case are sharp. The screen protector only covers the viewable part of the screen. So when you’re gesturing on your iPhone, you’re going to feel that edge.

3M makes privacy screen protectors for tablets as well and the sharp edges are going to be less noticeable as the product extends past the touchable area so you won’t notice it as much.

The last thing I’ll take about with the coverage is that 3M doesn’t include any useful install tools so you’re basically eyeballing your install. If you get it wrong, you’re going to have a hard time re-installing the product without bending it slightly, which results in bubbling in the corners where you tried peeling it off.

The 3M privacy screen protector has very little scratch protection. Anything harder than my #2 will leave a mark. It’s so soft…

When it comes to brightness loss, on my first series of tests, the 3M privacy films reduced the brightness of the iPad Pro screen by 20 percent.

When it comes to the clarity, I found the 3M Privacy film being better than most. This is probably the most subjective part of the review as I haven’t figured out a consistent manner to grade clarity BUT i have noticed that privacy screen protectors either have noticeable horizontal lines or a hatching. On the 3M product, there is a hatching but it’s very fine.

When it comes to overall protection, given the film nature of the product, I’m assuming it’s going to offer better than glass impact protection. That’s an assumption as I haven’t been able to secure any cheap screen protectors to test this product with. Ahh...isolation issues amiright?

Overall, the 3M screen protector is a below average product I think. The sharp edges and poor scratch resistance is going to be it’s downfall when I finalize the scores.
